Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), currently ranked among the world’s largest open universities, was founded in 1985 and is offering currently 227 academic programs through 21 schools and 67 regional centers spread across the country.
Every year, thousand of students apply for admission in this Open Distance learning University. IGNOU registration process is very simple as students can do it by sitting at their home.

- The University’s Bachelor’s Degree is provided for a period of three years. Only the Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP)(Note: Not offered presently) and B.L.I.Sc. Offered for a minimum term of one year.

IGNOU Admission Process
A student who wishes to take admission to any program or who wants to know the process of IGNOU registration must purchase a prospectus from the nearest IGNOU regional center.
The prospectus provides all the required descriptions of the current courses that allow the students for selecting the courses that are best to brighten their career. The prospectus includes all information about the process for filling in admission forms and will give complete guidance about all the courses.
IGNOU offers admission for many courses twice a year. The IGNOU admission is provided by online process for all the programmes which are mentioned in Common prospectus.
There are very few programmes for which offline admission process is followed. In offline mode, applications can do their registration in IGNOU regional centre available in their nearby area.
The procedure of admission for few courses available in IGNOU like MBA & B.Ed relies on the entrance exam and also on a merit basis. There are certain courses that take admission only on a merit basis. But some courses offered by IGNOU, the admission is based on an entrance exam.
Some other admission/ IGNOU registration related information are:
- Students who wish to pursue courses such as BAG, BSCG, BCOMG, BA, B.Com, B.Sc., BCA, BSW, BAVTM, are based on merit that is or equal to 10+2 scores received.
- BLIS admissions are based on bachelor’s degree scores or one-year diploma in library science is eligible.
- Admission to BBA in Retail (RL) is dependent upon merit. But admission to BBA in Service Management (SM) is entrance based followed by interviews.
- Based on their bachelor’s scores plus OPENMAT scores, candidates are shortlisted for MBA admission.
- For M.Com, MA, M.Sc. admission students are expected to have earned a bachelor’s degree in their respective subjects.
- Applicants for a Ph.D. must hold an M.Phil or Master’s degree with an aggregate of at least 55%.
- In any related subject, PG Diploma admissions are focused on graduation. Though diploma admissions are based on 10+2 scores or similar scores obtained.
IGNOU Admission Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements of IGNOU for the course/s of their preference before continuing with the IGNOU registration. Failure to meet the eligibility requirements could result in the cancellations of the student’s IGNOU registration form. Hence review the eligibility requirements before proceeding with IGNOU registration.
- Students who wish to pursue a Master’s Course should have a bachelor’s degree or a higher degree from a recognized institution or university. In accordance with IGNOU courses, the minimum aggregate criteria and required subjects to have been covered can differ. A bachelor’s degree along with a PG diploma or only a PG diploma might be mandatory for certain master’s courses.
- Students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s courses must clear their 10+2 from a recognized board or may have done a Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) from IGNOU. Some courses, however, can require applicants to have completed their degree/hold a PG certificate/be in-service/possess minimum experience.

Students are recommended to download the prospectus and carefully read the directions before IGNOU registration. Students should remember their username and password to log in afterward.
Step 1: Prior to enrolment, all applicants for the first time are advised to review the details of the desired program, including eligibility requirements, fee details, duration, etc., from the Online Admission System portal available on the official IGNOU website.
Step 2: Candidates should click on the “Register Yourself” button that appears in the applicant login area and fill in the appropriate registration details upon checking the correct details.
- The defined username must be between 8 and 16 characters.
- The password entered must be 8 to 16 characters long and alphanumeric.
Step 3: The applicant should click the “SUBMIT” button upon filling out the mandatory detail. The candidate’s username will be sent to the registered e-mail ID and SMS immediately. For future login, the student must remember their username and password.
Note: In order to go further, already registered/existing users must click on the ‘Login’ button and enter their username along with the password.
Step 4:The student would be required to enter personal information, program details, qualification details, course details, and correspondence details after registering via the “Login” button.
- If the subjects of the student are different from the subjects listed, the student should click on the checkbox “Others”.
- The student can pick “9999” in the field of “Board Code” for applicants with graduation qualifications and above.
After successful submission of the fee, the registration process gets complete.

Important points for consideration regarding Registration in IGNOU
Students should consider the following relevant points about IGNOU registration:
- Students will be selected for management courses based on their scores obtained during the OPENMAT test.
- Only on the basis of the National Level Entrance Examination students can take B.Ed admission.
- Only those candidates who apply for UGC-NET with JRF are eligible for M.Phil Economics.
If an error is made while filling up IGNOU registration form, applicants must correct the error in the correction window. For a certain period, the correction window would be open.

IGNOU Registration Status 2025
If student is enrolled in IGNOU to pursue any programme, then he/she must know how they can check their IGNOU registration status online.
Usually, the university takes 5 to 30 days to confirm the admission of any student after he/she apply for admission in IGNOU.
There are two ways in which students can check their registration / admission status. Either by logging to online registration portal or they can know ignou registration status by enrollment number.
If the student doesn’t know its enrollment number, then he/she must logged into admission portal to check enrollment number and download ignou id card. If the student find the enrollment number in the portal, then it means his/her admission is confirmed.
If the student enrollment number is not displaying there, then its means students have to wait for some more time as the admission is not confirmed yet.
